These works were carved at Conrad Stone, 1807 SE 7th, Portland, Oregon. Joseph Conrad's sculpture can be seen at the same address.
(The table weighs about 250 lbs. and is carved from the rarest white Alaskan marble. Years ago Joe got a permit to bring blocks from the abandoned quarry at Marble Island, Alaska in order to do repair work in the downtown Portland library and the Vista House.}
By the way, Joe and I met in a drafting class in the '70's. I initially helped him with his first fabrication business doing what I could to generate interest using natural stone in residential constructrion - unheard of at the time. I met the 'old timer's', learned how to use the tools of the trade and learned to carve using marble and limestone. I returned later on as an estimator, reading plans and sourcing materrials. The business continues today as the oldest business of it's kind in the greater Portland area by Joe's son, Charlie and daughter-in-law, Debi Wicks.
Sadly, Joe passed away and what a huge loss for me and the art and construction community in general. However, his renouned natural stone sculpture is on display at Conrad Stonecutter in his gallery and throughout the business.
